Starting the collaboration project, I’ve done an initial research. However before sitting in on the brief of the project i went to see the Brighton’s philharmonic orchestra, i was inspired not so much with the sounds of the music but more so with the conductor, i found it comical and wanted to be able to include this aspect into my final piece in some way. For our first lecture in the art of collaboration, we looked into Ursula biemann, The Black Sea (2005). This film was about the oil pipe lines that were being newly lade on a deferent route, and the film looked into the effects and implications of lots of people along it’s new route. For myself i found the films split screens effect affective. It gave a sense of how to formally get a more detailed understanding Of the local people and how they had been effected by the pipe works . The second film we saw was Lars Von Trier, The five obstructions (2003) This film was filmed as a documentary , were lars creates a brief for his friend and mentor Leth, he was asked to remake the film the perfect human in five parts, each time with a different ‘obstruction the first was in Cuba (but with no set) with no shot longer than 12 frames, and he must answer the questions posed in the original film . After watching all five obstruction in the film, I most enjoyed Cuba I found the sound very engaging and reminded me of Jacques Tati's playtime (1967) there was very much emphasis on particular object or actions to draw the audiences attention to them. For the first year artist talk we had Matthew Noel-Tod. Matthew showed us his early works, in were he re-enacted the blondie music video. This helped me to see old music videos in a different light. I proceed to do some research on music videos as an art form. Some examples are:
Talking Heads: Once in a lifetime (1981)
Eric B. & Rakim- paid in full (1987)
Joy Divison- Atmospere (1980)
N.E.R.D-life as a fish (2010)
This weeks film was called invisible adversaries (Unsichtbare Gegner) I only really enjoyed the knife animal / baby in fridge scene. Quick cuts and changes such like in the George melies – the black lamp (1905)
As a second year I’ve now moved from halls to a house near the sea front. Close to the pubs and clubs. The house used to be a shop, we’ve moved in with frosted glass windows and it is very noise. We have had people wee on our fount door as we’re watching telly. I’m think of using the busy night street as a space to project some form of footage, perhaps the project could look into the peoples responses, I could do this by documenting the projection project I have planed and try it to document this at different times though out the week to get a wider range of responses. I’ve previously looked at Gillian wearing work of street preformats and how she engages the public in her works. Like in her work dancing in peckham (1994) the film show her dancing to music only she can hear and films the baffled on lookers. I aim to creat some effect like this but with the medium of projections.
